Someone in the comments suggested that it's an AM (amplitude-modulated) radio tower and the entire aerial carries the current of the signal. When they put twigs on it an electric arc is created between the twig and the tower, and the arc is modulated the same way the signal is modulated, hence it produces the sound. It's like how they play music on those tesla coils. And yeah they could probably have died doing that.
