Which confuses me because everyone looks down upon games like COD and Battlefield (for good reason) for having pretty linear and repetitive campaigns with no memorable characters at all, but as soon as half life is mentioned all the sudden heavens gates open and angels start to sing at the magnificence of the half life series, which is guilty of nearly all these things (yes you hold more than two weapons).

Because half life pretty laid much laid the groundwork for how shooters are today. Good ones at least.
Also Half life isn't really guilty of any of that. It has very few actual characters, but you remember each one. The campaigns were very memorable as well. As for the gun thing, half life has never tried to be realistic aside from physics and it maintains that pocket of holding that works so well for games like it.
