Okay so I'm a little late on this but I'll retell a story my English teacher told me.
It was the 4th of July and my teacher was at a BBQ at his friends house, and eventually there was a older man who walked down the road and saw the shirt my teacher was wearing, which happened to be a flag shirt similar to the one that the man in that photo is wearing. The man walking down the road walked into the party with what my teacher assumed to be his grandson and said rather irately, "I didn't fight in a war for this country to have people like you disrespect the flag by wearing it". The man then took his grandson, left, and went on his way. The man was not old enough to be in world war two, but most likely the Korean war which wasn't exactly a pleasant thing.
He hasn't worn that shirt since.
