In most US states you have to take a certain amount of math classes before you're allowed to graduate. "Business and finance" would probably count as an elective or optional class.

It's to make people more "well-rounded" and for those who don't know what they want. Personally I don't mind a higher than average paycheck just because I actually bothered to learn some shit I never have to actually use, sweet deal.

School isn't really there to teach you how to get a job. It's more about teaching you basic skills and knowledge and introducing different subjects to you so you can later decide what you actually want to do.
