pretty sure her reason not to use humans for the actual comic is because the cats allowed her to use the neat style (which seems to rely on gritty realistic traits) and still have lots of freedom of expression
its easy to see which characters these are representing by their expressions alone, but you can also see how she has to cut back on how extreme the expressions are - they'd look horrifyingly creepy if used on a human as-is
