At least in California, it's not necessary if you keep it on private land. If you are transporting or selling it, the orange tip needs to be on it.

The orange tip is there because it's illegal to ship it without it, you can take it off if you want, because cops will take you down EVEN if you have that orange tip. Trust me I know, I have experienced it.
Paint it black. If the police come after you, scrape the paint off.
