When you buy media, it usually comes with a licence you agree to upon using the media, with CDs, it's implicit, and it's "You don't own the copyright, so no distributing this music." But if the guy openly encourages liberal distribution of his music, then the licence becomes "You don't own the copyright, but I'm fine with you distributing it around".
Technically, you'd need to check with the label or the artist to make sure you have legal consent to distribution, but in any case, it's pretty clear you won't get sued for torrenting his stuff, and even if you do, just show the court that text, and he'll lose most, if not all, of his leverage.
Last illegal thing I did : On a pizza delivery moped, rode on a tram line and then up a one-way street (the wrong way), got caught, but let off with a warning.
I littered. A police let me off with a warning and I thanked him repeatedly. Hardcore 4 life.
