A dialect is a dialect and has it's origins in a language.
We have tons of dialects in Norway too and many people have problems understanding some dialects, that doesn't mean they don't speak Norwegian.

That wasn't really my point. Cantonese is the one that sounds more like "Ching Chong Chang" or the stereotypical "pan dropping sounds". Mandarin sounds a lot more "gentle" and have lots of words such that blends similarly into the Japanese spoken language.

Actually, most of my friends think that English is the most spoken, with Spanish coming next. I was actually surprised when I saw the statistics, but realized that China is so densely populated, and most must know this language.

English is the most worldwide spoken language and most useful. But Chinese and Spanish are the most spoken in terms of numbers, but in more closed areas of the earth.

The "enclosement" of Spanish language could be arguable, since it's spoken in a wide range of territory: All South/Center America except for Brazil, the Guyanas and some spare territories or islands; Spain; Equatorial Guinea, Morocco territories next to Spain and part of the United States, mainly the south and the states next to New York; while (Mandarin) Chinese is restricted to China
But, yes, English is much more widespread and it frequently ends up being more useful
