The second. Japanese use way too much english words, specially on anime.

It's called Katakana, which is used to write foreign words (10% of current Japanese language is composed by foreign words, mostly from american origin), with the exception of words like "Tobacco", that entered in the japanese language around the 16/17th century (Portuguese merchants were one of the few foreign people that could pass trough their great isolating barrier). It's also used by little kids.
Hiragana is used to write normal Japanese and is the most common way to write things, apart from Kanji symbols

Watching Ergo Proxy again (last time was years ago). I think the Busy Doing Nothing episode (#16) is my most favourite anime episode ever, it's just so brilliant and simple.
