The second case is easy too, but it feels intentional. I get the impression the show is more focused with the why rather than who/how.

They were a bunch of children thrown in the inside of a huge ship where they were supposed to be all by themselves with no additional passengers, after seeing the dead body of one of their shipmates, becoming suspicious of each other seems like a very plausible course of action
You mean inside that room? If so, well, they didn't have any guns, the only thing Kujo had for self defense were those knuckle things, after seeing how psychotic Ned was acting, and the fact that he wasn't really dead, and therefore became the "prime suspect" at the time, they got scared and decided to escape, when you see a crazy person wielding an axe you turn around and run, you don't summon courage out of nowhere and fight him head-on, that only happens in battle manga.
After using them once on Ned, Kujo probably threw them away somewhere, you'd think it'd be wise for him to keep them, but he's dumb like that.

P much, but there was also the chance that he'd get killed as well.

With no visible cause of death? He could of easily had a disease/heart failure, which seems more feasible than murder.
Ned dropped the axe. They used it to barricade the door so someone else must have grabbed it. Therefore they had both weapons at that time against an unarmed man, and when Ned was trapped inside he has no means to get out.
There is, but the method he used to antagonise the situation made it easy for him to win. I suppose they gave him free reign on how to start everything.[/sp]
