Only read past Yellow volumes myself, but they were pretty great. Plus Yellow is an awesome [sp]reverse trap[/sp] making it automatically good.
I'm putting off reading the rest though because yeah, I've heard they aren't so good. Also Emerald looks like a massive faggot.

Don't skip Ruby/Sapphire chapters, OR the Leafgreen/Firered chapters.
Both are pretty awesome, but the latter ones are outright epic, straight standing next to the first 2 volumes in terms of story and nostalgia.
