Yes, it's obviously there to make the serious bznz more serious.
But I personally felt that it dragged the whole show down because it was just drop dead retarded because it wasn't funny or entertaining, just bothersome. But it's definitely a show to hold on to, it's pretty good.
In the second season they do manage to be a bit funny when they are cute and nice though.

You should watch it, it has some very hilarious moments. Also it's SHAFT which is a good enough reason to watch it alone. Also it's (after what I've noticed) one of PsY's favourite shows, which would be a good enough reason for me to watch something. Since he has over 600 entries on MAL and everything.
