I've drunk from rivers on expeditions plenty of times and I'm still here. Apart from that one time we didn't realise there was a sewage distillation plant upstream. Ho boy, I was crapping piss and vomiting stomach acid for three days, not such a pleasant experience. But yeah, drinking from a still lake's not such a good idea.

High water is best - fast-flowing mountain streams are generally ok, as long as there aren't any animals nearby.
