Want to become a good artist? Prepare to spend many hours on drawing, take up lessons, draw realism and you'll one day be able to draw as well as this artist. There's nothing stopping you, there are plenty of free lessons on the internet. Tools are also free, some are better than the others of course but a easy program to use is Gimp.
Instead of wanting to be as good as him, you can start drawing right this second. Don't feel bad if your first drawings look like shit, because with a 99.9% probability I can say that this particular artist drew some really crappy stuff when he started. And look where he is now, drawing awe-inspiring stuff like the one you quoted.
Drawing is an excellent way of spending your spare time, it can also be really relaxing to forget all the troubles in the world and have your creativity guide you. Drawing is a great medium of expressing your feelings or just letting off steam, plus it is a talent you can have good use for.
Did I mention that being creative is a valued talent in pretty much any line of work? It's true, artistic creativity is a great way of keeping your brain well-oiled and working. Being artistic is a great way to impress members of the opposite/same sex too, so it can and will benefit your personal life too.
Go ahead, take that first step and learn to draw. =)

The whale ran out of velocity since it ran out of wave. The seal did not scare it off, it just couldn't get to it and so had to back up to get into the water as the wave receded.
