I am honestly curious as to what kind of fish that isn't a dolphin is referred to as a dolphin. I've never heard of that.

Those are Porpoises, they received the nickname 'Dolphin' (for whatever reason) and people don't realize it originally came from the Mahi-mahi. Hang on, let me get the reason, I have a book about it right next to me.

Porpoises received the nickname Dolphin because they're from the Delphinidae family, which the Mahi-Mahi is not a member of. They're related to a pompano dolphinfish but that's not in the Delphinidae family either.
