Photoshop automated my ass. The clone tool works the same way as copying an image many times, clipping or ripping apart the piece you want, place it ontop of the original image and start rubbing away the edges to make it a smooth transistion if you want.
Real artists have nothing to do with tools. Real artists have to do with product. Or rather, effort. Mona Lisa is just as much art as drawing a stickman. However most people prefer the Mona Lisa over the stickman as it has more work put into it and it looks better for most people.

Your critics make their points for someone that knows what they're doing. You don't tell a 3 year old on a bicycle without training wheels to do a few tricks when he's just learning how to balance and ride. I understand criticism is necessary, but actually pay attention to what you criticize when you're talking to someone that has a very little knowledge of what he's doing. Telling them "open the brush strokes settings and play with shit" doesn't really explain shit to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. If you're going to criticize, at least explain clearly how it could have been done better.
I know actually tracing the black lines as well would increase the quality of the tracings. Most tutorials I find are all about tracing picture of real things. Keep in mind they don't have a solid black border of equal width all the way around the image, something which, as far as I know, is a pain in the ass to do since you move the points around manually. If there is an easier way, I don't know it.
Finding a decent tutorial of tracing a drawn (or whatever you would like to determine a scene from an anime) picture is almost impossible, as all of those are half assed and offer no decent tips to someone just starting. Most tutorials start expecting you to have more than basic knowledge of what you're doing. As I've said before, I'm still at basic.
Here's another picture I did yesterday. I actually changed brush size for shadings and color changes that didn't have a border on them. However the general lines still have their rounded edges, since I prefer using the brush tool as it has a constant width through out the entire line. If I tried to do it manually, I would never get shit done because no matter what I would feel like some parts are uneven. While the ends of lines would look nicer, I would hate it due to a line constantly changing thickness.
