If you find the characters In Eva to be annoying then you know nothing about annoying characters, Shinji at his most whiny is nothing next to Chaos;Head's protagonist.
Since we're talking about Evangelion, I just finished making an NGE themed MIDI-Metal album, so might as well post it here :v:

Watch Shirokuma Cafe, y/n
It's a 6/10 show you dumbnut.
Simple pleasures? You mean the annoying characters? Non-existing plot? Pointless DEEP things? A nonsensical story?
I dunno, what is this simple pleasure that NGE holds that you are talking about?
The setting? Legendary? How so?
I loved the setting. The world being in this state of near apocalypse, the decay of the old architecture, the fortifications built up to fend off this mysterious enemy.
I think people get to caught up on whiny characters. They may not be the typical heroic protagonists, full of bravado, that are seen in most anime, but I think they are still interesting characters. Plus, most for them are far from being static, which is more than can be said for most of the shows people love unconditionally.
They all have psychological struggles to deal with that are fundamentally different than the other characters. IMO that is interesting, regardless of how whiny they are.
I dont think it is "pretending" to be deep. There is sexual, religious, and psychological symbolism that foreshadows and accompanies the relationships between the characters.

Ahahaha, oh God, have mercy on my sides.
The setting is boring IMO, but that's taste all the way so whatever, I like the upside down city and that would be it.
The main is a whiny no-good person that despite everything constantly feels pity for himself and doesn't see what a good fucking life he has with people that care about him, which is the main point of the show. It spends 26 episodes trying to tell any faggot watching the show that "people love you, cheer up, the world isn't as terrible as you make it out to be".
It's whine whine sob sob my life is terrible and terrible things are happening and it's all so terrible, woe is me. Then we have the archetype tsundere bitch that can't do anything but complain about what a whimp the whimp really is whilst secretly craving his dick. NGE was certainly one of the shows that really set the standards for tsundere, but that doesn't forgive the character for being a generic and plain tsundere with little else to her but being a whiny bitch.
Rei doesn't have a personality which is part of her personality, little is to be said about a mute sex doll that panders to every loners wildest fantasy, a sex doll they can both cuddle and fuck.
I don't see how you can say the characters in NGE aren't static, they all just do one thing and do that from start to end. Shinji doesn't really develop throughout the series, he goes from being a whiny faggot to being a slightly less fearfull whiny faggot and only at the very end, the very last episode and it's very last scene does he actually realize anything and as a result he would of changed if we saw the story from there on. But then there would be no story to tell after all.
NGE is absolutely pretending to be deep and saying otherwise is just silly.

The show is riddled with symbolism and talk that doesn't actually mean anything or serves any purpose but looking interesting and leaving lots of room for speculation amongst the people that missunderstand the feeling of "there is no meaning to it" as "I don't get it, what a mindfuck, I need to decipher this".
Also, found this good read right now.
I hereby predict the "It has roots in Greek, I chose it because it sounds deep" image's appearance
And using symbolism to deal with character relationships is pretending to be deep. That's like the very definition of deep pretentiousness. Character relationship drama should be foreshadowed by the characters themselves and their behaviour, not by the world around them, unless of course it is made by SHAFT in which case carry on and take my money

Then again, that might not be fair. Nothing compares to the shitness of Takumi.
I like how the big robots look in Evangelion.
if you are watching eva because you want to watch something good you are doing several things wrong
watch it for its historical significance or not at all, if you do end up liking it for some reason then I guess that's nice but don't go into it expecting it to turn into a favorite of yours
read this, it does a good job of explaining why eva is so big

it's got some spoilers though
I did not like nge

I just don't feel like watching nge
whenever someone posts nge without capitalising it it just looks like they had a heart attack in the middle of a sentence to me

Wow this really got me. Giggled like a little girl just now.
I keep thinking you guys are talking about SWG when you mention NGE.
I'm to lazy to formulate a reply to this conversation. So I'm just going to agree to disagree.
Wow this really got me. Giggled like a little girl just now.
well little girls do tend to giggle like little girls so
there are
for rebuild, 1, 2, 3 and 4
3 isn't out yet (in theatres it is though)
the old movies are hardly worth watching, but this is the two seperate lines anyway
NGE > Death and Rebirth? > End of Evangelion
Rebuild 1.0 > Rebuild 2.0 > Rebuild 3.0 > Rebuild 4.0
While I'm not too keen on the original NGE, I don't think you've actually seen Eva until you've seen end of evangelion
Then again I don't know what kind of ground 3.0 and 4.0 will cover.
Watch Shirokuma Cafe, y/n
no
terrible jokes every episode
but i guess the panda was cute
hi teh man
Should I watch the GITS movie before Stand Alone Complex?
i started on evangelion
at which episode does it become the best anime ever or is it really overhyped
It's so overhyped that I once got banned because I ranted about it here :v:
(it was a fair ban, my rage got the better of me)
hi ninny
It does have a catchy opening though.

Ironically the happy sounding opening doesn't at all reflect the series at all.
I love Evangelion's soundtrack.

There's something about an English speaking choir that is really cool.
It had a pretty bitchin soundtrack too.
[editline]25th February 2013[/editline]
Especially, 3.0s', ooooh~.
Should I watch the GITS movie before Stand Alone Complex?
