Battle Royale worked because they were all people who knew eachother prior to the game. There were conflicts and relationships and rivalries already, plus they got unique weapons at the start and that created goals, planning, and plot.
The Hunger Games was a random out-of-the-hat free-for-all with people taking the time to get all kissy.
