A is used to load bullets into a magazine without placing each bullet individually. Modern weapons use removable magazines, and when you reload you swap them out. Before modern designs magazines were builtinto the gun and soldiers would carry clips of ammo so they could reload faster. It became common for people who didn't know the difference to confuse the two.

They're called clips because they clip into a small slot above the magazine and the bullets are pushed from the clip into the magazine. Clip also sounds like clit.
