it's a colour gradient, the image colours or brightness is mapped to a colourful gradient. half an hour or so in [insert your favourite image editor here], playing around with a gradient map to undo it should at the very least yield a proper grayscale image.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that's no thermal image. It's just an effect that remaps B/W colors to random hues.
