It's not fake. A guy took apart two N64 controllers and made a cast for that for the few games that had a dual-controller setup.

One of the control scheme was for two controllers to be used. All the buttons did the same things but first controller's control stick moved your character and the second's moved your sight up, down, left and right.
It was a lot easier then holding a button to aim or using the C-Buttons.
