Wow, I've seen quite a few things come out of this forum, but FP pulling together and saving someone's life is definitely a first. You all should be proud of yourselves for this. This is rather touching, really glad he's alright and I hope he recovers well from here on.
I know others have said this, but Sobotnik will appreciate the efforts later on. Right now he probably feels sick regret for getting caught and having to deal with the pain of whatever he took mixed with the pain of upcoming medical bills, psychologist visits, and suicide watch protocols
It's weird, because everyone (for the most part) is just pixels on a screen to everybody else... but when you spend enough time around here, you start to get a feel for other peoples' identities through the little bits and pieces you see of them in their writing every day and they become familiar to you, even if it's just minutely. I always feel a little sad when I see people leave or get perma'd, no matter how I feel about what they post.
people always whine about how internet friends aren't "real" friends, but they're people just like anyone else, and you're not restricted by who lives within a few miles and can go hang out at a bar. In the case of forums and facebook junk, all of your interaction happens on both of your own schedules from anywhere on the planet, and what makes text so impersonable if we're still having conversations? 100% of my in-person friends are still super connected on facebook, google talk, and/or skype, it makes a difference for everybody because of the consistent communication, which coincidentally helps us spend more time hanging out in person
In my ideal fantasy world, there are many facepunch users who would be permabanned. Primarily Rust kids. The number of fp users I wish were dead is zero. [sp]Including the Rust kids. You were once 14, too.[/sp] If you see this, Sobotnik, please forgive us (us as in fp, I personally had nothing to do with the effort). However, even if that seems impossible, please choose life. There is always another chance tomorrow that things will change for the better; but only if you see tomorrow. Please, man. You deserve life. You deserve those daily second chances. I've never felt the need to make a post just to point it out before, but I find your posts valuable and informative sometimes, and for whatever history you've made for yourself here, you've improved my experience on the forum with those quality posts. I appreciate it. Goes for pretty much everyone in this thread, really.
You guys did awesome, you all saved a life.
I can sleep easy knowing he's okay. Nice job everyone
Good job guys. This is easily something you can shrug off thinking someone isn't going to actually go through with it. Glad to hear you acted instead and by the sounds of it saved the guy.

Also, I propose we do a "Get Well" card signed by as many Facepunchers as we can fit, similar to what we did with that dude that had brain cancer
Take all suicide threats seriously. You only get one chance to make the wrong assumption.
I hope sobotnik gets the help he needs. Joe and Sandman, you did something amazing.
Take all suicide threats seriously. You only get one chance to make the wrong assumption.
And this is why people who automatically equate suicide threats with hollow attention-seeking threats are one of the few things that almost invariably make me explode with rage on the spot.
I always found this video about suicide interesting, it does give you an insight about that scary process.
Facepunch wouldnt be the same without you Sobotnik
I'm glad he got help, I consider suicide too much and I can't really go anybody about it. They either find the subject too uncomfortable or become too self absorbed in themselves to listen. I don't wish this on anyone.
If Sobotnik reads this I wish you get better, I myself was suicidal at one point. It is something I am happy I never went with. Things will get better, trust me.
And this is why people who automatically equate suicide threats with hollow attention-seeking threats are one of the few things that almost invariably make me explode with rage on the spot.
I should mention, protocol here on FP is: IF YOU MAKE A SUICIDE THREAT, WE WILL PERMABAN YOU FOR 'DEAD'. This is not mocking, this is not ignoring the threat, this is telling the person they shouldn't be hamming it up on a forum, because (unfortunately) it's a common setup for scams and general emotional trolling (placing blame on someone to make them feel bad is a seriously shitty thing to do). If you're on that edge you need to seek help from anything but an open internet thread, because we all know there's bound to be that stereotype shitty "DO A FLIP!" kind of people that show up and cause problems. By all means, let people know, friends will do a much better job at seeking out aid and talking you down. (as elix says on the next page) wanting to tell someone you're doing it means at some level you don't want to do it and desperately need help, so if it really does come down to making a thread just to let it be known, do it. We can unban you when the dust settles. In these events we make efforts contact authorities (and posters who've shown they know the person or can otherwise help) with available information. It can be pretty blatant when it's just some obnoxious brat being a twat but in every case an effort should be made, if only to teach a harsh lesson about the severety of the threat. This thread did things right, good work and thanks again
I think the word "DEAD" comes off as mocking even though the intent is separate. You guys should call it something else.
I think the word "DEAD" comes off as mocking even though the intent is separate. You guys should call it something else.
Yeah. "Deceased" is a lot more polite imo.
I feel like this is what Sobotnik needed right now, he just needed a little push to keep on living, FP banding together and caring enough to thwart his suicide attempt should at least give him some semblance of support. I don't really think he wanted to die. If he really wanted to die he could've just done it quietly without anyone interfering. I don't really know, maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

If you're caught making false suicide claims I will permaban you because it's not a thing to be joked about. If we can determine the legitimacy of the claim as you easily can with this thread, I'll do whatever I can to help.

It's more of a last ditch effort to get the support you needed when nobody would listen or give it. That's what has happened here, and we were able to band together and give support.
Regardless, I hope Sobotnik can bounce back from this. I have a friend who is extremely happy with his life and is even planning to propose to his girlfriend. You wouldn't even think that he was just about ready to off himself a few years back. Sobotnik, buddy, I don't really know you that well, but if you ever read this, know that things will get better.

[sp]Or worse, but let's not.[/sp] Telling someone you're doing it is a cry for help from a desperate soul who doesn't want to let go. And that's why suicide threats are no fucking joke under any circumstance. [del]JoeSkylynx[/del]Mister Sandman was very likely one of if not the last person Sobotnik expected to be talking to, but he still made that last reach for rescue. And thanks to a few fucking heroes and Edinburgh's finest, someone reached back and snatched him clear. Thank fucking god. Shut up, it got dusty all of a sudden in here.
I believe this is worth mentioning that without the help of Native Hunter, OvB, Niandra, Wingz, and Doctor Zedacon, we probably would have never got as far as we did. Either way, thank you everyone for helping us figure out the information we needed to help Sobotnik. Hopefully he'll be able to get some proper treatment for his depression so this doesn't happen again.
sheesh facepunch I'm just trying to send some condolences here :(
Not sure if I have ever come across Sobotnik, regardless of that it is still nice to see that everything worked out. Well done guys.
I think the word "DEAD" comes off as mocking even though the intent is separate. You guys should call it something else.
I'd suggest simply "don't post suicide threads". I'd imagine if you really are considering suicide and get banned for "dead" that would make the situation worse. Does anyone see any disadvantages to changing this?
idk man I think the risk of a few people getting scammed or trolled is preferable to one guy possibly killing himself because his last cry for help was ignored in a really callous manner
I won't argue that it's not obnoxiously blunt, but we consistently make a point that posting these threads is 100% going to get you banned to prevent twits from using suicide threats to extort feelings for personal spite or even squeeze donations out of people like they've done in the past. I don't think I've even performed the ban myself (haven't even seen one made in years) but I know in the past mods have made sure they've got contact details and that there's other users talking to them on steam to keep things up. I recall craptasket pulling one of these bans once and we had a good chunk of the mod team talking in skype digging up details and ensuring people are in contact with the dude, it's not as cold as it is on the surface and the user is made aware that the ban isn't just being assholish, but that it's there to remove them from the peanut gallery so they can focus on talking to friends.
I remember sobotnik added me on skype and made a remark on how often I changed my avatar that's really the only contact I've had with him
i got out of the hospital and im ok
