Yes it's a really big shame that funding to explore the galaxy is getting smaller and smaller while expectations of it gets bigger and bigger. To understand earth we have to understand the universe.
You can't see the forest for the trees, and it rings true when we're looking at the state of our planet. People usually say that global warning isn't true "because I can't see the effects of it", and we may not have done that unless we had seen our own world from the outside, or what happens on planets where there is just too much greenhouse effect (venus).
We now know that the earth is heating up and that mankind is a huge factor in that (the releasing of carbon dioxide both by burning up fossil fuel and cutting down more forests than we replant for instance), and well I'm not going to talk more about this, but my main point is that we probably wouldn't have known about the effects we have on our planet if we hadn't went outside our own planet to look at it from a different point of view.

Galactic exploration isn't going to be a one-man affair, if we hope to find the answers to the origins of our universe, of our own planet, the existance of life etc we're going to have to get together as a species, and it is this common struggle that will sort our shit on our planet.
We will never solve the problem with mankind if we only sit on this desolate rock in space, we as a species have always strived for finding greener pastures and we won't find any of that on our earth anymore. Now, the next frontier awaits ; space.
