Woah - anyone remember that Discovery CGI special where they investigated what alien life might look like? This was one of the hypothesized creatures. Big packs of these things walking their way across a big blanket of leathery, clear material traversing what looked like an alien ocean, except not fluid.
I was pretty young when I saw it, but it seems they based them on these things or vice versa.
It was really entertaining and had robots.
