Before hats, there were an alternate set of items that had cool mechanics.
After hats, we get 4 alternate sets for each class with gimmicky mechanics and now it's fucking hard to tell them apart when fighting, and the game is now about making money rather than making fun
If it weren't for the fact that they produced so much crap in so little time with so little work-up, I'd probably still be playing. Hats is stupid in my opinion (the only good one is the Ushanka, because it actually looks good), but it's made valve thousands in dosh. Can't blame them for wanting to make some more green, except for the fact it shifted the focus of the game from playing to farming/trading/throwing in money/making money from my medal #3332
I'm actually curious, how much money would I make from my #3332 medal, and how much would the #3333 be worth? It kind of kills me that I was 1 early, mostly because I would have liked a rounded number

All they did was give what the fans wanted.
It's because of what the Cosmetic items did to the playerbase mostly.
I still play it but I try to avoid all the Hat business.
