i still can't believe people "quit" playing tf2 just because of cosmetic items
Not just cosmetic items, but the fuckton of different weapons that make it hard to keep track of the metagame and even more difficult for Valve to keep everything balanced.
i still can't believe people "quit" playing tf2 just because of cosmetic items
It's not because they're there, but more because the entire focus of the game has shifted to them. Plus some of the unlockable weapons are annoying as FUCK, luckily my old 360 copy of the orange box has plain old TF2. edit: holy shit wall of posts about tf2
i still can't believe people "quit" playing tf2 just because of cosmetic items
i quit playing because the community was fucking retarded
tf2 is terrible after valve ruined it
I was fine with the early updates. New Heavy guns were great, new pyro stuff was great, etc. The Spy stuff was stretching it a bit, but it wasn't too bad. Then came the Demoman Update. That was the one that killed TF2 for me. Why? Look at some of the publications Valve devs wrote about TF2. They talk about how each class has a very specific role, and they do all sorts of things to make it instantly clear to a player what the opposing player can do. I would call it a game design that should be taught in game schools, it was that good. The Demoman update threw that out. The Demoman, to that point, was an AMBUSH player. A back-lines guy. He'd hit the front just to take out a sentry gun, or maybe a troublesome Heavy. And what do they give him? A sword and shield that made him ludicrously fast and deadly. Those things would be overpowered on the Scout - but at least there it would make sense. You see a Scout, you think "fast, somewhat weak, dangerous at close range". That fit those weapons. You see a Demo, though, and you're expecting sticky mines or grenades. Maybe a pipe-jump attack. Not a fucking banzai. That was the update that killed TF2 as a game. The story stuff was great, but only as a story. When they tried to put the story stuff into the game, it didn't always work right. The Jarate, for instance - it kinda fits the Sniper's gameplay, but not really. The sword shit, though, was just ridiculous. And it kept getting worse and worse. I wouldn't mind the hats, or the random drops, or even the store. That's just stuff draped over the side of the game. Sure, the visual style is completely destroyed, but you can still identify classes, which is the important thing. Yeah, the random drops are annoying and a bad way to reward players, but it's tolerable. And yes, the store stuff is overpriced, but so what? I'm not going to buy anything anyways, even if it was reasonably priced. No, what I hate is how they ruined the gameplay. I'm never installing TF2 again, unless Valve adds some sort of "Classic" mode that essentially resets the game to how it was at launch (with the bugfixes kept, though). No hats. No unlocks (even though there were some good ones). Nothing but 9 classes, each with three weapons. Give me that, and I might start playing again.
i miss my bill's hat it made my demo such a badass
All they did was give what the fans wanted.
which is a terrible thing, you shouldn't base all of your decisions around what fans want. look at fanfiction.net or deviantart, you shouldn't base game design decisions on the opinions of buffoons.
Look what happened to sonic
That was because the Playstation 2 killed off SEGA, and they though it would be a wonderful decision to transform Sonic into a cashcow to recover the money, launching tons of mediocre games (With some few exceptions), feed of the oldschool fans' nostalgia with countless reharshes of the same Sega Genesis games and milking Sonic to death
which is a terrible thing, you shouldn't base all of your decisions around what fans want. look at fanfiction.net or deviantart, you shouldn't base game design decisions on the opinions of buffoons.
There are things you should listen to your fans on. Story they can sometimes be trusted with. Bug reports, definitely. Balance changes, usually. Mods can sometimes be as good as the actual game. Art direction, though? No. Most gamers wouldn't know Verrochio from Picasso. Look at how many stupid "tacticool" mods there are. Look at Oblivion mods, for fucks sake. Gameplay design, hell no. Never trust fans to design gameplay elements. Almost none of them actually understand what makes a good game. You'd get people adding dozens of near-identical guns to Half-Life, or adding an RPG system to Rock Band, or adding a story mode to Mario Kart.
