Plastic bottles do break down into your water and whether or not it's cancerous I'm pretty sure it still ain't healthy. Since they're porous they also collect germs and shit more easily and because of that can often smell horrible. Using glass water bottles is just a bit more expensive but easier to clean out and doesn't degrade into the water after some time or in the heat.
