I couldn't agree more.
Part of me wants to save for this, because its a rear wheel drive hatchback, and I've never tried a rwd car before, and the interior looks really nice along with that odd exterior which kind of grows on me, but the diesels are a pain in the ass because you either have to remove swirl flaps on the M47 or constantly buy timing chains on the N47, the petrols aren't any better, and the interior is apparently plasticy, which is a big nono.
Theres also the M pack deal as you said. People want an extra 5k if it has the M pack styling, and that usually makes it go upwards of 15k, which seems like a total waste of cash for such a car, when I could just get an A3 with a fantastic interior and exterior for a bit less, and a really good engine that doesn't fails at something.
I somehow ended up looking for used Miata's today.

The A6 has what I think its the very best screen ever. Blends PERFECTLY into the dashboard when closed, and doesn't looks like it was an aftermarket deal that went on after buying the car.

U joints. Virtually every drivetrain in every car uses them with the driveshafts.

Some look ok, but others look cluttered as hell or just excessively big, like the VW's dash buttons.
The BMW is the best one there. It's so simple, and it keeps the gauge cluster away from all the other things. I hate it when they make it a unibody with the rest of the dash, instead of making its own "cubbie hole".
But the worst has got to be dashboards that put nothing in front of you, and put all the gauges in the center instead, like the newer Twingo

Engine mounts are extremely easy to fabricate, and making a driveshaft go through a 20 degree turn is hard on the U-joints. Better to mount the engine in-line with the differential, really.

As for "lining up with the gearbox" in your initial post, the gearbox hangs off the back of the engine, so it's always in line no matter where the engine is.

A Rolls isn't just any car, haha. You can't put a price tag on one. They're designed for aristocrats and Arabian and Indian royalty. I'm sure they don't mind whether it's worth $3 million or $13 million.
