It’s legit one of the worst looking BMWs of the period; it’s just so incredibly uninspired. They pretty much just got a generic wedge shape, slapped the contemporary BMW grille on, put on wheels that screamed ‘eighties!’ but in a bad way, and said done.
BMW actually had many good looking cars at the time. Not quite a bog stock production car, but this 635 raced in the Group C period of the ATCC in the early 80’s:

Personally I think the Neu Klasse or whatever they called the boxy BMWs are some of the absolutely least inspired cars ever constructed, up there with 1970's Detroit.

The new X-class is basically just a Nissan Navara (they co-developed it). I'd have expected way more from Mercedes, especially considering there aren't really any premium pick-up trucks out there (outside the US).

The only thing I don’t like about it are the fake exhaust outlets; one of my biggest pet peeves along with fake vents, rear diffusers (on road cars), stickers and racing stripes, and most rear wings.

Hopefully some things are changed. I reckon the kidney grille needs to be a bit shorter, the lip spoiler should not be so dramatic (currently looks like one of those shitty rocket bunny spoilers), and I don’t know how [sp]oh wait, it’s German[/sp], but BMW managed to complicate the exhaust tips of all things.
Also it needs a painted roof. This black roof fad needs to die.
