not an essay but here's a shot. the stuff in spoiler tags isn't story-relevant info, but it's still stuff that'd be cooler if you encountered it out on your own by playing it, so i don't think you need to read it.
undertale is a very very very good rpg. lots of people are going to say it's a tribute to earthbound, and well, it is. the guy who made it was very active in the earthbound hacking scene and there's even a few references to this halloween hack inside undertale. however, any resemblence to earthbound is mostly at a surface level. it's got a similar sense of humor but toby puts his own brand on top of it.
the trailers tell you that you have the option to fight or spare enemies. however, this has much more meaning than you might think. most players will probably start the game by fighting stuff. i mean, it's an rpg, right? however, choosing to fight instead of sparing enemies has legitimate consequences. the story will take off in drastically different directions depending on whether you make an effort to save things, kill them, or whatever in between. (or killing them harder.) [sp]people on the overworld notice when their friends are gone. everyone you interact with will treat you differently. hell, you won't even run into the same people. let's say you're the type of person that grinds in rpgs, and you walk back and forth in the first area fighting enemies so you can beef up your stats. well, good job buddy, because you just started a run where you kill literally everything you encounter, and this has permanent consequences. literally permanent. deleting your save won't get rid of them.[/sp]
it's not hammed up either. it will legitimately make you feel bad. you'll feel awful.
now, the encounters in the demo don't really delve that deeply into the mechanics of sparing. it's, you talk one thing a bunch then you can spare them. however, basically immediately after the demo ends it gets more complex. choosing not to kill enemies becomes a puzzle, especially when there are different types of enemies on screen. and, even then, that's part of the point. the game is TRYING to push you to attack things. to take the easy way out. after running the game 3 times, i found the sparing mechanic to be a lot more fulfilling than just killing everything.
whether you choose to attack or spare, you have to defend against enemy attacks, and this is in the form of a little bullet hell shooter. every enemy has different patterns, and you'll have to dodge different patterns simultaneously if there's multiple different enemies on screen. again, the game knows how to mix this up. i can't say much more beyond that without spoiling.
the writing is incredible. EVERY part of the game is a set up for some kind of joke. everything. the characters are charming, the enemy designs are charming. this is one of the only games i've played that has actually made me laugh. of course, it can also be incredibly dark, even horrifying if that's the path you choose. the backstory that it tells you at the beginning of the game seems like more of an Excuse Plot than anything, but it's incredibly in depth and you can tell that Toby has put a lot of time into building this world, its characters, and everything that could possibly happen.
the game also remembers everything you do. this is a game where your choices ACTUALLY matter. [sp]it knows when you savescum. it'll question why in the hell you went back to your save point so you could kill someone that you previously saved. interface screw is everywhere as well[/sp]
lastly, the art and music. i do honestly believe that the demo is, for the most part, ugly. the demo is the first section of the full game. let me tell you, [i]it does get better.[/i] the soundtrack in the demo is almost all chiptunes, and like the art, this expands in the full game to span all sorts of things. it's an amazing soundtrack and i wish i had bought the bundle
the game's 10 dollars. a single runthrough takes 6 hours, but the game is very, very dense with content and incentives to make you play the game over and over to experience everything. so far I have about 30 hours logged, and there's still a shit ton to go. it never felt stale because the game always has a way to mix things up.
i have to talk in vague terms here because it's something that really just needs to be experienced. i can say, without a doubt, it's one of the best games i have ever played. please give it a shot. there's a lot of time (and heart) that went into it.
