He bought the rights to the book it's based off of, which is actually pretty good.
If you read the book then watch the anime, the anime makes a lot more sense, but it's still far off from the book.
Sentou Yousei Yukikaze appears to be about jets, which, if the adaption of All You Need Is Kill is any indication, means that the jets will be replaced with Mad Max-style gyrocopters in order to make sure that Tom Cruise's face and body are never obscured.

Glasses always seem to do that in anime. They never seem to want to obscure the eyes in scenes like that, often because they're important in getting a feel for the character's attitude, and having a glasses frame in the way would kinda ruin the shot.
Ajin's pretty smart when it comes to glasses.

The moire on the screen tone + jpeg artifacting all over everything + low res have been making it really hard to pull full b/w range out of the damn thing.
What I've been doing is basically what you're mentioning though, I've been trying lots of different filter/blur combinations to try and get the moire out without killing sharpness but I've been having trouble finding one that I was happy with. I ended up trying the blur/fake tone/outlined combination because I eventually figured I'd be better off separating the outline from the fill and just blurring the fill super hard until all the junk went away, before reapplying a consistent screen tone pattern to make it look like the original.
These scans are really messed up, one of the first things I tried to do was isolate all the artifacts to see if I could get rid of them, and it ended up looking like [url=https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6035324/hell.jpg]this.[/url] There's a lot of jpeg/screentone issues going on with this thing.

Those vertical lines every ~100 pixels sure are annoying though, why can't nips into scanning and releasing into a proper format without fucking everything up god damnit.
