The first season is self contained. The second season wasn't originally planned, it's just due to the success of the show.
Go watch Gatchaman Crowds.
Although you might want to find the bd version of the last episode, the original version is kinda confusing because they left some details out or to the imagination.

The SOL aspects were the ones that disappointed me. It starts really good, lonely kids living in the countryside. Could have been great, but then it turns more and more generic and anime with Hotaru actually ruining most of it with the obsessive stuff and more in general by looking grown up and Komari being loli creating a boring dynamic between the two. Also the rabbit stuff was awful
