You're forgetting the hilariously crowbarred love interest, the story that just meanders around for all but the last 2-3 episodes, Kirito's first steps in his quest for blandness and the ending.
The first half of SAO has the advantage of adapting the books chronologically, meaning that the later-written, comparatively better-written gaiden books make up most of the first half, which is why as how Whoopsalot puts it, "meanders around" and doesn't really advance the plot because the plot never really started. It's enjoyable as adventures in MMO-land, which is what I went into SAO wanting. That's also the reason why I didn't hate the second half even if it's worse than the first half and has a laundry list of fundamental problems.
My answer to "should i watch SAO" is if you like the concept, watch it and see if you like it, but remember that the first episode blows the rest of the season out of the water. But also watch Log Horizon which is universally agreed to be a fantastic show but is a very different style to the action and character-drama focused SAO, and even if you don't like SAO you should watch Accel World, which also deals with virtual reality and MMO-style games, albeit focused around a fighting game rather than an MMORPG, and fully realises the potential of its premise.

I'd extend that to episode two. They make for a great introduction to the series.

I enjoyed most of SAO the first time around, mostly. Still thought everything to do with the romance was absolute garbage then, which is probably why the second half didn't bother me as much, because [sp]Asuna might have been stuck in a damsel in distress situation, but it meant I didn't have to put up with her post-gaiden novels blandness and the incredibly unentertaining shit that came with the romantic plot[/sp]. I'm not sure if I'd like it or not a second time around now that I'm fully aware of the show's problems.
I feel like SAO or maybe just [sp]the second half[/sp] would have been a lot better if it ditched the drama and just made it people messing around in a VR MMO. Particularly with [sp]the second MMO. There was a lot of potential there with the factions and world that was only briefly touched upon.[/sp]
Because that's basically what, for the most part, Accel World is, and it's an incredibly fun show as a result. All of the characters are having a blast in the VR game most of the time and it reflects on the mood of the show as a result When the show did ramp up the drama in the second half with its main villain it became noticeably weaker for part of it, and in the post anime LNs it went straight back to the tone of the first half of the first season and was much more enjoyable as a result.

all this [sp]stag beetle gladiator[/sp] shit is the best though, it's kind of like the horse racing in part 7, it's there to give a break from stand battles, which have gotten really tiring thanks to some of the earlier parts being entirely just stand battle after stand battle

I hope Araki would do this kind of stuff more in his stories.
While the stand battles are great for the most part,you kinda get fatigued from having the story almost completely centered around it which is why scenes like [sp]D'Arby the Gambler and Gamer[/sp] became one of the most memorable "fights" in the series
