I watched Pokemon and Cardcaptor Sakura, but both so long ago I can't really pass judgment on either, nor have I seen either in their entirety. For some reason, I just can't do the old, hand-drawn artstyle. If I'm going to be watching something, I want it to be visually-appealing, and most old shows I find simply aren't visually appealing to my tastes.
As for mech I just don't like mechs.

I think you mean cel animation. New anime is still hand drawn, you just trace the cels then add colour on a computer instead of having a guy ink and paint it on the cel.

I was never of the mindset of "what's happening" I was always like "the way characters are acting and reacting to things in this is really interesting", the show talks about morality, the psychological impacts of the setting, and has an underlying message about how people see other people.
