to excuse myself for not watching chihayafuru: i dont live by your rules old man srsly tho im having so much trouble even trying to just keep up with airing shows that aren't ones im super into like mushishi
I read some chihayafuru and it was a good thing to read if I recall correctly
i learned that japan is a real place
stop spreading lies
Don't get me wrong, I'm still interested in watching it. It's just that I was thinking "Wow, what's this weird game they've thought up?" Once I learned that they didn't make up Karuta just for the story, it seemed a lot less imaginative. It went from being interesting for making up a new game and sportsdrama down to just sportsdrama. It's like if you were watching a show set in a fantasy land, but a few episodes in they say "hey let's take a break at Hobbiton and have a chat with Frodo", and you realize that it's actually LotR fanfiction.
he probably means the newest ep I imagine
Ahh, I'm not reading the manga yet. I intend to though, so I guess after the anime is over I'll start reading it and I'll know where things started to change the most.

I thought it was pretty obvious it was a real game right away.
What made you think they made it up tho. Also, thinking back, I think the person showing it to me actually skipped over the first episode and just showed episodes 2-4 for some reason. I don't know why he did that.
I think it takes more skill and imagination to mold your characters around an existing game with set rules and facts than to make up a new game that you can easily change.
I think it takes more skill and imagination to mold your characters around an existing game with set rules and facts than to make up a new game that you can easily change.
Yeah, like wixoss really nailed it, the way they used ingame mechanics and stuff clicked with the story and the characters well. Solid show.
I think it takes more skill and imagination to mold your characters around an existing game with set rules and facts than to make up a new game that you can easily change.
Well, there would be a difference between making up a new game and then saying "main character studied the ancient Mouse Trap texts and learned that there's a secret way to win by stabbing your opponent in the hand" compared to making up a new game with specific rules and then sticking to those rules. [editline]15th November 2014[/editline] On a completely different note, World Trigger decided that 12 minutes in was a good point to put the OP.
I'm glad karuta is real tbh even in 3DPD, it's pretty great

The second season does it even less. They just sit there while firing lasers at each other and then after a couple of minutes of vague "this person is doing well or not doing well" provided to us by characters involved somebody wins or loses. The second season doesn't even bother having the players randomly apply cards that have their purpose and effects completely unexplained. You could make it dueling avatars with a Megaman.EXE-style powerup system and literally nothing would change except for the fact that you'd have proper action scenes.
similar to how the only thing bahamut has to it's source is the characters as far as i'm aware
well there's barely a "game" in the bahamut game, it's just ftp garbage with decent character designs. the anime has like nothing to do with it and that's why it's good.

I guess they just assumed that cute girls + suffering = good writing, which is complete horseshit. [sp]looks like sora no method is pulling the same shit too god dammit yes i mad[/sp]
Wixoss also kind of falls apart when you realise that most of these suffering-game situations make playing the game involuntary for a reason. In Wixoss playing children's card games requires the consent of both players. The problem is that no characters in this have a fucking spine or realise that the characters "threatening" them have utterly empty threats if they even have threats beyond yelling at them a bit. You can literally just walk away with no consequences. Hell, you can stop playing at any time you want with no consequences. So conversations that should go "hey, play the card game" "no" "play the card game" "no" "PLAY THE CARD GAME" "fuck off" go "hey, play the card game" "no" "PLAY THE CARD GAME" "ok, oh no i'm suffering"

So I'm kind of getting into anime more as I wasn't really interested in it before, just watched your typical stuff like DBZ and Cowboy Bebop but I really want to watch some more shows, I've checked out the OP and picked a couple already. Also I just started watching some of the older Gundams after getting into the series from Reconquista in G, I'm watching Victory Gundam right now and planning on 08th MS and original after. Are there any other gritty realistic ones like Victory? I like a serious grim story. And if possible any recommendations on Manga? I've picked up Vagabond, Berserk, JoJo's and I Am A Hero and am really enjoying them, anything similar would be much appreciated.
Ghost in the Shell is great if you like that sort of thing.

I'll check out VOTOMS too, thanks for the suggestion.
a friend also recommended Space Runaway Ideon.
Ideon is kind of a weird one The series itself has a lot of flaws (mostly the pacing), but the overall story is really interesting. The finale movie Be Invoked is really good and one of the best anime movies out there.
Votoms and Blue Comet SPT Layzner are recommended, Layzner has slightly more modern animation since it came out later in the eighties with a higher budget than Zeta Gundam but Votoms animation isn't bad or anything. They're both pretty gritty and much further on the Real end of the mecha scale, with Votoms being about about a man on the run from a conspiracy and basically everybody else in a very grungey future setting, with four metre tall utterly disposable mecha that zip around on rollerskates rather than fly, ones that the protagonist tends to trash within five to ten minutes of getting into one, going through one or sometimes two of them per episode. I can't say much about Layzner, but it's about some small Mars outposts being attacked by an alien mecha invasion as a pit stop on the way to an invasion of Earth, with a defector from the alien side attempting to stop the invasion. While the mecha are Gundam-tier in power level, fuel is a constant and looming issue and it has things like the fact that the cold war is still going in Layzner's future, and the plot is pretty gritty overall. Layzner is kind of forgotten despite being by Votoms's director due to only getting complete subs recently, and due to the fact that due to lawsuits with their main sponsor at the time, it got cut short and one of the OVAs should be watched instead of the final episode. For Gundam you have 0079 which you'll find has aged far less than you'd expect other than the poor animation, Zeta Gundam, and 0083, which has fantastic fights and animation but a plot that suffers in the second half due to a director switch, 08th MS Team which has a ridiculously shitty romance and suffers in the second half due to a director switch, and War in the Pocket, which is really good and only suffers from GMs jobbing. [editline]16th November 2014[/editline] Unicorn might seem tempting since it's modern and has shiny new animation but you shouldn't watch that until you've watched 0079, Zeta, ZZ, and CCA. [editline]16th November 2014[/editline]
Yeah, just Victory, a friend also recommended Space Runaway Ideon.
Ideon might not be a good one to start with. It suffers from a lot of pacing issues and the middle is very slow and not much happens. Which isn't to say that it isn't worth watching, but maybe not until you've got some other shows under your belt.
The latest shirobako episode made me want to watch ideon and I barely even know what it is.
