with the death of winner and kinglah, the mecha/anti mecha power struggle has shifted in favor of mecha.

Implying it wasn't always 100% shit.
I don't like mech, does that help?
I've always liked Mechwarrior since a kid so Mecha is p. fucking cool bro. (western mech designs are still way more badass)
In anime it seems like the mechs are usually characters in themselves rather than a tool.

That depends on what show you're watching. It's why mecha are sorted into Real and Super categories, which is a sliding scale and some mix elements. On one hand, you've got Super. Mazinger, Getter, Gurren Lagann. Superhero mecha, that sort of thing. This ranges from treating them as less of an objective and more of a character to just being inordinately powerful or particularly unrealistic.
Then you've got Real which are either are trying to go for a relatively more realistic portrayal of the mecha, or treat them as tools or military weapons. Macross, Votoms, usually Gundam and in particular Victory since the Victory itself gets trashed constantly. The fight hasn't really started until Uso gets his legs blown off or uses them as a projectile.
Gundams might have a distinctive face and be very powerful, but at the end of the day they're just a tool. Except for Unicorn but that thing is poorly written to begin with and the Unicorn is basically magical. Gundams are a good example of the sliding scale since it varies from series to series.
Obviously not all shows fit neatly into either category but it's a general term. Aura Battler Dunbine mecha literally run on magic and get stronger as their pilot gets stronger but still have a very typically Real portrayal during combat and for most users besides the main characters, Dai Guard is about a Real robot trying very hard to be Super, and so on and so forth.
Most Real shows still tend to have their lead mecha look obviously more heroic or unique than the rest though. You want fragile and disposable go to Votoms for that.
Also fuck you Japanese mecha are better. Mechwarrior's best designs are [del]stolen[/del] licensed from Dougram and Macross anyway. Or licensed and later redesigned slightly when the license expired.

It's a family friendly mecha anime like how Madoka is a friendly magical girl anime

I swear this is like the fourth time I've done this.

it's definitely been more than four times the automerge has been broken
reds you might be a mecha nerd but i appreciate the knowledge bomb.
maybe i need to watch some of this shit
So I was watching Maria Holic EP12 and happened to notice some familiar silhouettes Sketched out on my screen.

[sp]Sae, Hiro, Yuno, and Miyako all quite plainly visible, though Miyako has wavier hair than usual.[/sp]

Battletech and Mechwarrior kind of have abit of a disconnect between them so I wouldn't say MW stole anything (MWO is brining back some of the 'unseen'), and the FASA ones I'm not even really a fan of, the Hellbringer, Timber Wolf and Mad Dog (or any clan mech) are way cooler anyway.
But enough of going off on a tangent, I didn't know about the wide variety of genres and classifications so I learned something new, it was kind of silly of me to judge the whole genre on what little I've been exposed to. I appreciate all the recommendations so far as well I didn't really know where to start with Mecha either.
I'd just like to post a warning that I have no idea what the difference between Battletech and Mechwarrior is besides one being video games and the other being tabletop.
Apparently Go Nagai made a manga adaptation of The Divine Comedy
I expect lots of fan service
and for Mazinger/Devilman/Cutie Honey to show up at some point

I don't think they appear, since he already partially did the divine comedy within Devilman Lady, which had tits
devilman lady is pretty interesting too

Once again this ranges from series to series.
In Full Metal Panic or Suisei no Gargantia Al and Chamber respectively are clearly characters, with Sosuke and Ledo having a tight bond with their mecha.
In Brain Powerd the Brains aren't even characters, but you can still feel the connection between the characters and their Brains.
While let's say the Gurren Lagann, despite being outrageously massive, is merely a tool Simon uses.
[sp]If you hadn't noticed already I'm very weak to the entire "bond between the pilot and the machine" thing. Doesn't have to be specifically mecha either.[/sp]

Had no idea this would be on youtube already. Love this song.

I'd call Yuu Brain a character, it was the one with the strongest personality out of the Brains.
I went wrong here.
Brains are characters, they're just not vocal.
I really wish anime would stop doing the "bad people have annoying voices" thing so much. It ends up being ridiculous unless the character is already hammy and it tends to be obnoxious to listen to.
[editline]16th November 2014[/editline]
And [sp]Ulith[/sp] takes the spot of most ridiculous over the top (not even the good type of over the top though) villain of the year in this week's Wixoss.

I can't take Grisaia seriously at all. This show is a joke.
Ep 7 spoilers

Best thing about the show are the different EDs.

I'm excited to see how badly they ruined Sachi's route, especially since it's only 1 episode.
The ending in the VN was pretty emotional, in a good way. Happy ending kind of deal. The anime takes any emotion out of the routes and turns it into rushed unintentional comedy.

This reminds me of something
Even after 7 episodes the search for Sora no method's story is still going. Who knows if it will ever be found.
this Akame episode ;_;
this Akame episode ;_;
I too am sad that at the end of a great adaption they said "fuck it let's ruin it" and went off script despite adapting everything prior quite well.
Even after 7 episodes the search for Sora no method's story is still going. Who knows if it will ever be found.
I keep hoping Noel is going to be like "Fireworks! Ooh! Let me try!" and blow up the city or "Kaiju! Rawr!" and summon Godzilla.
But so far the story is:
-"I slap you" "no I slap you" "no I slap you back"
-[sp]"My mom died." "That's nothing. I can't see fireworks anymore."[/sp]
-[sp]"Shione said she wants to make up for being a bitch and watch the meteor shower with you!" "That's nice... so, uh, why the fuck isn't she here then"[/sp]
I think I found the closest thing to a murderer in Girlfriend Beta.

And Cross Ange continues to be surprisingly entertaining. (Spoilers, I guess? It's Cross Ange, who the fuck cares)

they condensed sachi's entire route to one episode
