[sp]Man characters are just dying left and right in this show, and I'm not really feeling anything when they die because their individual plot is so thin. Like when Chelsea died, I didn't even remember her name so I had to google it. But the show is great nevertheless.[/sp]

You can play/read Umineko without watching Higurashi. They take place in the same universe but it's an entirely separate story. Kinda like watching two Marvel Universe movies about two different superheroes - you might see a reference or two but that's all.

True, [sp]the witch Bernkastel is the personification of all the thousands of Rikas that died in Higurashi over and over again, a twisted evil being separate of the original Rika and also one of the best characters.[/sp] But it is only a connection - it doesn't make it necessary to read Higurashi first.

If you payed attention to that fight, the only attacks Lubbock took was a punch or two and a stab in the butt. Cross Tail really shouldn't have broke just from that. Furthermore, he's always shown to have some sort of string armor on his body, kinda curious how he got stabbed.
As for ways he could have saved himself

HE apparently also kept some string in his mouth for emergency situations. Which he's used without even having crosstails on.
Basically, they shafted him and gave him a lame death just to rush things along. I suspect susano will get the same treatment in the next ep or two
