No Rebuilds and no EoE because that's not the original ending. I tend to never hear what Shinji did wrong besides "he didn't want to pilot the robot like i want to in my power fantasies" and "he didn't bone all of my 2d waifus despite being 14 and most of the women around him being assholes or terrible people in general" and "he had the nerve to complain about his horrible situation".

Spoilers now: [sp] It's been a while but for one example, the episode when his school friend was made into an EVA pilot and got infected or whatever, Shinji should have lit the guy up, but no we need to have a bitch fit and think about the ramifications of killing this zombie eva so your friend can maybe possibly not likely be resuscitated and they can kiss or whatthefuckever goes through nancyboy's head. In fairness, that could have been fixed by letting the computer pod take over in place of shinji which should have fucking happened immediately IMO, computers cant pee themselves and cry. [/sp] My issue with shinji isn't that he's an emotionally unstable kid, to the contrary I think that it's interesting that he's challenged with his mental barriers and daddy issues while trying to save the planet, but when he's written to cry foul at the slightest sign of mental tax and go into faux-deep introspection in order to make your show seem interesting or provocative is pretentious writing to me. [/sp][/QUOTE] [sp]Here's the thing though, Shinji finds out at the very last second and the human reaction to "kill your friend, oh by the way did we mention you have to kill your friend because his robot is out of control" is not "sure okay boss". Shinji was suffering from critical lack of information and in the heat of the moment panicked. His logic being that one, he doesn't want to shoot his friend, and two, he doesn't want to be a murderer, and three, he wasn't told he had to fight humans at all. Gendo is a piece of shit and instead of anybody trying to reason with Shinji they just went "shoot him already" over and over. They didn't even bother giving any alternative except "aim for the cockpit" to try to convince him. Given time a more reasonable decision and compromise could have been reached but Shinji had about ten seconds to think.[/sp] I hate the idea that if you show any kind of human reaction or mistakes you're whiny and useless because do your damn job. Which he did. Repeatedly. If you were in that situation you would not unflinchingly follow the order without hesitation. Shinji repeatedly proved himself heroic and he's a whiny bitch because he didn't blindly accept his situation because save the world, a position where they repeatedly told him he was utterly expendable to them. I didn't find Shinji whiny at all. I found whatever complaints he had were pretty damn valid and it didn't help that he was constantly treated like shit, ended up in a hospital after half his fights, was refused vital information repeatedly and was constantly kept in the dark, and didn't receive a tenth of the help he should have had to deal with his situation. If anything his complaints were understated after going through hell repeatedly. And on the times when he said "fuck this i'm out" he immediately came back after their reactions were "whatever, fuck off". Piloting the robotto is practically torture in half the fights, and yet Shinji showed that he was willing to ignore orders and charge an Angel with only a comically tiny knife after being beaten up and impaled, something that he can feel, to protect people. And yet after a display like that all people get is that he's a whiny wimp? I feel like a lot of Eva's complaints come from "i wouldn't do that, i would be the cool competent guy in this situation piloting the cool robot" reactions. Note that I'm not saying that's your opinion, it's just blatantly a lot of people's opinion on it. Evangelion is supposed to be subverting all of the typical pilot tropes so it's not fair at all to go "god damn it shinji why can't you be like my hotblooded super robot pilots" I didn't find Eva particularly deep either. Character introspection doesn't make it particularly deep, even when it went off the rails due to lack of budget in the last two episodes.

[sp] Your friend is just a lump of meat at that point, and you have a bloodthirsty robutt trying to kill you, if you need to take 5 to sort out your priorities you need to get out of the giant robot and let the USB do the job. Wasn't the dummy plug proven to not work particularly well? I can't remember it being used very often.

I went into Eva going "ok worst protagonist ever, let's see what you've got" and found him to be an incredibly reasonable character who went above and beyond what could have been reasonably expected of him and proved himself a worthy hero in a completely fucked situation where he got shit on over and over. And again, for all his supposed whining, whenever he got the chance to leave he stayed out of a sense of duty. You know who charged into every battle without hesitation and basically did all of the things you want Shinji to do? Asuka. You know who got their ass beat in pretty much every battle except her debut and the goofy sync-dance episode? Asuka. You know who else followed all orders to the letter? Rei. You know who was far less competent at fighting Angels than Shinji? Rei. The only fight that Asuka won on her own was her debut, and that was one that had Shinji in the cockpit with her on top of him not being available to fight in his own Eva,meaning there was no possible situation plot-wise where she could lose.

i hate shinji because my hatred has to go somewhere and basically everybody else in the cast is already at maximum capacity please understand

Maybe it was just my expectations going into the show, and it's been around a year since I watched it. I think I understand your point reds and maybe it's just a matter of perspective on my part, maybe I'll rewatch it after I finish JoJo. Do the other EVA rebuilds / remasters deal with him differently or is it the same story, I kind of wanted to check those out.

How people behave is contextual to a whole bunch of shit, to their present company and is able to be influenced in any number of ways.

I don't see how this is a fault of shinji's character.
