Anno has made like two things since EVA and I don't think he's directed more than an OVA or two since. If he wants them to move on from Eva then stop making the damn thing, and don't make a bad story deliberately or intentionally sabotage parts of it if you're going to do so.

I find what Anno is doing interesting though. I don't believe he's deliberately sabotaging it or trying to make a bad story. It's more like he's using the popularity of Eva as a vehicle to send a message to his audience about what he thinks they're doing wrong. 3.33 isn't bad, it just has one hell of a downer message that he's trying to reality check his fans, and by proxy, otakus with.

Pushing the idea of following your emotions over logic is probably the correct message to send to the majority of the Japanese population, but it's likely the opposite message you should be sending to otakus who are reactively doing to the opposite extreme. The majority of anime focuses too much on the former, and probably adds fuel to the fire by reinforcing (reactionary) escapist tendencies, while the latter is really what most of the audience who would watch an Eva movie should be hearing instead.
I don't think it's about whether it's a downer or not, I've just heard that 3.33 is garbage or at least very poor compared to the others and I don't think it's fair to make a poor narrative and then go "no man it was all part of my message".

The narrative is not poor at all. It's not any less confusing than EoE, at the very least. I do feel like there's a great deal of people who aren't too happy about 3.33 taking the hot-blooded, emotionally charged optimism of 2.22 and pouring a bucket of ice water on it though. It certainly didn't make a single bit of sense on the first watch through, but neither did EoE. The tone and message are certainly opposite that of 2.22, and some of the characters do some really stupid actions throughout the movie, but I wouldn't call it a poorly laid out story though.

I never thought I'd see a serious discussion about Eva's story here and I never thought it was possible to have a discussion at all on Rebuild 3.33.
All that shitty fucking movie left me with was the memory of some incredibly bad 3D models that seemed to be the only reason the movie took so damn long to release.
The story was a garbled mess that I couldn't possibly find any interest in trying to figure out. Oh yay, timewarp, lets try and figure out why this shit is happening, shit is happening, do I have any reason to care? No.
The whole movie can be summarized with this dialogue between shinji and the others: "What is happening? Why are you treating me like this?" "Shut up Shinji"

I think the movie makes a lot more sense if you rewatch soon after watching EoE
[sp]It represents a continuity where instrumentality doesn't get fully carried out but gets interrupted half way through. Whether the interruption is caused due to Shinji's decision as the controller of instrumentality or whether it's caused as a result of Kaworu's interruption with the lance is left up to debate, but it's hinted that it's the result of the latter.
While in EoE you got to see intrumentality carried through to the very end, in 3.33 you get to see the aftermath of it being half assed due to the interruption. The egg created by instrumentality is clear in the scene where Kaworu shows the devestation to Shinji, but because the process didn't complete you end up with a half ass result where the old human race didn't die out, and the new "human" race of lifeforms didn't take over the planet, as would have happened after a full undertaking of the human instrumentality project. It's frustrating how Shinji never seems to get anything explained to him, but the truth is that most of everything [B]does[/b] actually get explained to him
it's just that most of the people doing the explaining didn't realize he (slash the audience) wouldn't understand shit without 14 missing years of context behind the explanations, hence why everyone in the movie acts so coldly towards him. For example Misato's encouragement of Shinji's actions towards the end of 2.22 may seem extremely at odds with her treatent of Shinji's in 3.33 and the callousness which with she treated him, but it's likely a result of the lack of understanding she had as to consequences and motivations behind Shinji's actions in 2.22 as shown by her sudden realization that what was occuring was the third impact. [/sp]
it is kind of annoying how little is explicitly explained in 3.33, but I believe that with some rewatching and perhaps some research into the backstory the movie makes a lot more sense, and is worth reviewing a second time
