I didn't notice any particularly bad animation, though the art shifts can get a little annoying, especially on BD.

Then because the story was so confusing and fucked up, I looked into the original series but I think it just made me even more confused. And then there shit like this:

one guy attacks a rogue construction mech and freezes it and himself by damaging its cooling system
they build a mech to fight them and give it an upscaled revolver
crows are significant at the end for a reason I cant remember
It was made at the earliest 13-15 years ago.
This has been bugging me for years,and sorry for the crap clues that is all I remember.
I wonder how many people get fooled into only watching Rebuild thinking it's a legitimate rework and completely ignore the original series

While trying to find what it is i remembered that there is one movie i still can't find.
It was something i saw on tv when we had a channel that showed anime at night.
(This is how i saw my first anime movie Spirited Away back then.)
I remember there was a boy and maybe some small robot/creature with him.
At the beginning the boy was walking around underground with a flower or some some flora that for some reason was really important or rare?
At some point he sees flashback how his girlfriend or something ends up in blastwave on the surface.
The show itself was about him finding some rare mecha and getting on surface to fight some other mecha/aliens.
There were probably other mechas too and at least one who was fighting main cast, but then joining up with them.
This is all i can remember.
I already tried to go through all mecha movies, but couldn't find anything like that.

I can never remember titles of anything so many partially watched movies lost.

In my professional opinion as resident mechafag I have the qualifications to think NGE is pretty good and you should just never talk again because you have statistically objectively factually conclusively bad opinions. NGE did nothing wrong.
