Watch either first. Movie is an artistic movie about the concepts of cybernetics and advanced human society, the series is more gung ho kick some ass scifi.
Both are great, they don't really share anything beyond the setting and style, the characters are pretty different and the movie's tone is almost the opposite of the series.
I wondered why there was 144 new posts, then I saw it was stupid bullshit about ratings again.

I would watch the movie first, gives a better introduction for the main concept on what's it going for.

GitS has different continuities, you could even watch Arise first (you shouldn't though, because that's the weakest)

why would you want to end a "series" on something that is weak? If the order of the series doesn't matter, eat the good food last imo. I haven't seen any ghost in the shell stuff so I wouldn't know if the order mattered though. That is actually one of the things I was going to ask about eventually.

if youre trying to get into the series, why would you start with the worst run when its not a required watch to understand the canon? He should watch the essential shit first (movie, series 1, movie, series 2, movie) then decide on whether or not he likes the canon enough to watch arise.

Arise is kinda, idk, "fanfictiony"? I had fun, but nothing more. I'm not sure how much someone who's not familiar with the setting would like it.
