If the first seven episodes were filler, then that was some damn good filler and every anime should aspire to have filler that good.

Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop don't have filler, they're episodic. At best a third of the episodes are related to the main plot.
Not to mention they both have an episode where the whole group dies, then they're back the next episode with no explanation.
