I guess you can, however, doing that would be fucking retarded, because it woulda been slow, and you would only be able to update the files once the external drive is in the PC, and if you have it out for a great while you'll end up having a monster-download ready, so I wouldn't recommend it

How do you marathon a show that hasn't finished? Either way you'll need to stop at 10 (or 9 if you plan to only use coalguys (which have the best subs))
