There are stickers inside the phone, battery case, and on the battery. If these get wet, they will show up as a solid color.

The reason they won't let you get a new phone is probably because of the contract they set up for it. If you were to buy a new phone, it would be a ridiculous amount of money without signing a X year contract. (Which if you did sign a new X-year contract, would mean you would be paying for two X year contracts). You could cancel the contract but it would also cost a ridiculous amount of money. (I've got sprint and they charge like $100-$200 to cancel a contract)
My bros got a blackberry curve and it was free with 2-year contract, but without a contract it was like $200 or something. It's how they make some of their money.
