(Of course, I'm not as sure about Duck Game considering that some decently well-known Youtubers played the game, combined with the fact that it's coming to the Nintendo Switch)
Warzone 2100 was developed in 1999 was an great under-rated RTS. It featured the ability to design your own units by selecting a body, propulsion (wheels/tracks) and a turret. It also featured a 3 campaigns, each with a persistent main base for the length of each campaign. Campaign missions ranged from dealing with enemies and objectives in the local area surrounding your base (via expanding map boundaries) as well as going on away missions to other sectors where you would have to reinforce your away mission forces from your main base via use of a transport craft that would bring you 10 of your chosen units at a time.
The game also has a 400 tech research tree which made skirmish matches quite overwhelming for newer players. Techs ranged from new weapons, equipment and structures to various buffs to unit health, damage, armor, etc. The main campaign drip feeds you the techs to research through collection of artifacts you collect as you locate them around throughout the game, normally after destroying an enemy base or outpost.

The game is still being developed through an open-source project that allows the game to run on modern systems which is available to download here: https://wz2100.net/
I really recommend this game as I just beat the campaign for the first time today even though I had the game back at release in 1999.

Is that the game with the weirdly realistic and in depth melee combat system?

It was alot of fun.
Startopia, no question.
A great management sim where you run a space station filled with all sorts of goofy over-the-top aliens that all have their own roles and wants that you have to work to accommodate- from the hardworking Groulien Salthogs to the good-for-nothing Polvakian Gem Slugs. Throw in some great depth of strategy and some amusing Douglas Adams-esque writing and you've got a recipe for a DAMN fine game. This is one of those games I've been going back to since I was a kid, and still adore it to this day. If you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself to give it a go. Hell you can get it on either Steam or GoG for under ten bucks. I can't recommend it enough.
Just tell me how many goats I need to sacrifice to get a sequel to this game, and I'll get right on it.
Completely agree. Here's hoping that someday we get a sequel to this wonderful game.
Also; Can't have a thread like this without at least mentioning XIII once.

A great FPS game. The story was pretty great for a video game story starting off with a protagonist that has amnesia too, leaning more towards having the player become embroiled in this big conspiracy that they're trying to fight against, and having alot of really neat flashback sequences in the form of the player character regaining his memories. The artstyle was also top notch too, and I haven't seen anything quite like it yet in recent years.
[sp]The fact this game ends on a cliffhanger and knowing that there never was nor will there ever be a sequel is saddening, if only it did get a proper sequel. At least the comics exist, even if the storyline between the two isn't 1:1 the same.[/sp]

Such a good FPS. With a sequel that was planned, and then turned into a book :c
Factorio. I mean it's got some popularity, but there are some mediocre games in comparison that have gotten way more positive attention.
XIII is such a fun game
I feel like Killzone is pretty underrated due to a few of the problems it had. But it was really good. It gave you a multi-player mode with bots that, to me, gave it infinite replayability, and you could team up with someone else in splitscreen even. Plus the gun play was really fun.
Zone of the enders 2 might not be perfect or really good, but I think people didn't give it enough attention.

I played SO much of Desert Storm 1 & 2 and then some of the other ones, so good (haven't touched the FPS ones, I don't expect them to be as flavorful as the old ones).

I played through this whole game myself, it was a shame what happened to Jackie, near the end. But it was a well done game.
What happened with the developers, as to them going under?
Bloody amazing game, I've been trying to shill it everywhere I can for the past 4 years, but nobody knows about it or even cares.
I'm still fucking salty that I'm literally the only person that ever cared about modding or model extraction.
It's a shame what happened with Jackie in that game. Regardless, it was a well done game.
What happened with the company? Why did they go under?
Yakuza? Only recently started getting steam internationally a few months ago when Yakuza 0 came out despite its success in Japan.

Great cinematic presentation and fucking full to the brim with shit to do. Play air hockey, beat up adult babies, play shogi, go fishing, beat up some more dudes.
Kinda clunky mechanics (that get more refined as the series goes on) but you probably won't find many other series with this much content packed in each game.

I usually hate 2D platformers, but this game is quite the treat. It's a real shame that it hasn't been selling all that well, even after its release on Steam.
[T]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fb/Punisher_game_cover.jpg[/T]
Before there was Batman Arkham Asylum there was The Punisher. Why in God's green Earth has this game never gotten a digital re-release on Steam or something escapes me, since it's probably the best comic-book game I've ever played. Heck, it has connections to the 2004 film, so not only is it a fucking great comic-book game it's also a great comic-book movie game!

Gonna have to back up the Yakuza series, they're fantastically charming games with fun brawling and really enjoyable crime melodrama plots, plus the side stories are really good, 0 in particular has for the most part nailed every little side story I come across.
Binary Domain (Third person shooter from the Yakuza team, pretty basic gameplay, but feels really nice, really charming story and characters and great robot/world designs and boss fights)
Factorio. I mean it's got some popularity, but there are some mediocre games in comparison that have gotten way more positive attention.
A month after EA release, Factorio was still the #1 top-rated game on Steam. After the recent update they broke their record of concurrent Steam players of over 20K. That's not counting DRM-free copies from GoG and the website.
I'm sorry Factorio isn't underrated in any sense of the word.
darkest of days.
it's an fps that basically is a time travel story
you go back to the battle of tannenberg, battle of antietam and fucking pompeii at one point
it's pretty good. i had a lot of fun, but graphically it wasn't all that impressive
This game is much better than the trailer tries to make it seem like it is, if that makes any sense.

They tried to produce an open-world MMO in the Sleeping Dogs universe where you pick a triad faction to play as (SYO, 14k or w/e). The open beta basically showed that it was lazily thrown together and had very little promise. They used the version of Hong Kong as it was seen in the original Sleeping Dogs with virtually nothing changed.
Square Enix never released a statement as to their exact reason why they were shut down, but if I could hazard a guess I'd pretty much just assume that they exhausted their funds trying to get the game on its feet. It's a shame, too, because if they had come out with a comprehensive sequel to SD, I'd leap to buy it.
United Front was a developer with great practice. They had some talented storywriters, environment designers, animators, etc. You could definitely tell that they infused passion into making SD what it's heralded as.

Also does the first Nier still count? Pretty much discounted everywhere within a week of release, panned by reviewers, though later became a cult classic.

Yo, 1.7 even has the promised missile pony.
Sleeping Dogs is also really, really good and I almost feel guilty that I got it free from the "games with gold" thing.
However, I've got to bring up Viet-motherfucking-cong.
This shit is still, after 14 years, the single greatest game to be based on Vietnam. It has everything, motherfuckin' booby traps, punji pits, bouncin' betties, POW rescue missions, helo crashes, claustrophobic tunnels, and charlie sneakin' 'round the forest waitin' and watchin' for the moment to strike. It's got enemy raids on yo' base and it's got sweet huey hog attack runs. It's even got the sickest main menu theme in any thing, any where. Seriously, listen to this shit.

Every last bit of this game is dripping with passion and effort to bring 1967 A fuckin' D to your bitch-ass PC, and it's not even made in the USA. That's right, the Czechs shamed our entire FPS industry with a game that surpasses any hither-to known American efforts.
Honestly I'm going to say Metro 2033 because while yes, everyone knows about it, hardly anyone I have talked to has actually played through the series and just knows about it with regards to GPU / systems benchmarking.
Metro 2033 was such an involving game that had a compelling, engrossing storyline with such a great atmosphere and gameplay

Singularity was an oddly good sci-fi FPS. It didn't have much replayability but it was really fun and had oddly good graphics for a 2010 game that was a very early UE3 launch
Said it before but God Hand, directed by Shinji Mikami

Featuring intense fighting action, God Hand is a challenging game full of campy whackiness with a mixture of Fist of the North Star and other classic martial arts anime. The game is crazy and you never know who you will be fighting next.
God Hand is a game that leaves you with sweaty and cramped hands after each session. Combat is brutal and rewarding, defeating opponents without taking a hit makes you feel totally badass. The game boasts a high skill ceiling, with lots of room to improve your fighting techniques.
It also features a dynamic difficulty system inspired by Resident Evil 4, doing good will gradually increases the difficulty, leading to more aggressive and faster enemies while getting hit will bring it back down. (Unless you're on Hard which locks it on Level DIE)
Unfortunately the game came around a time when difficult games weren't so popular, it wasn't received too great. It was also the last game by Clover Studios.
If it was released today, I'd imagine it would see more success due to games like Dark Souls being in right now.
If you haven't played it yet, then fix that now!

God, the singleplayer AI was so bad but the missions were so satisfying, and all the sound effects were so goddamn good.
Real gold was in the multiplayer, though... I don't think I've ever found a shooter that could match the chaos of 64-player CTF on Stream. Shame nobody does big team battle games like that anymore -- seems like it's all 16-player Call of Duty or Counter-Strike clones now, and the only gamemodes are deathmatch and one-life bomb defusal.
