I think the artists decided to paint the engines as being functional to make it look a lot more like two airplanes of two opposing factions flying together instead of an airplane heavily damaged that's being stalked by a lone fighter airplane. =)
Yes, it also shows that even though those who sent the men to fight might be terrible people, the soldiers are just ordinary people who are forced to do things they would never have even dreamt of doing had it not been that the government had decided that it's OK to do.
Like you said, they met and became really close, and I'm almost certain that 9 out of 10 soldiers in every conflict could've been friends if they hadn't been told to kill eachother.
