Of course they cut it down because they need wood. It's just stupid to cut the biggest and most awesome tree in the forest when you could cut down the smaller ones instead.
Maybe because it is easier to cut down one big tree than six small trees.
Not all wood has the same properties. Redwood was and still is widely used in construction, so it's not like it was a complete waste (giant sequoia logging, on the other hand, was). Also, even disregarding the relative lack of environmental consciousness back then, that photo was taken (as far as I can tell) in a forest of similar trees, so the loss of this one wouldn't have seemed like too big of a deal. Still, the primary reason was that it was useful and profitable (you get a lot of lumber out of something this big), and I doubt most of those involved really cared much about what they might have been destroying.
Another thing to point out, that tree may have lived since the middle ages.
Just found this gem. http://htwins.net/scale2/ It's really amazing. When you reach the point of skyscrapers, you can't even see the human. Just goes to show how small we are. And then, you can go out, with nebulas and galaxies which could fit billions of our solar system into them, perhaps even more. And, you can just continue zooming until the observable universe is only about 1 quarter of the screen. What could lay beyond what we cannot observe? You can also go smaller, all the way down to ants, atoms, quarks, neutrinos and even quantum foam. Just amazing.
That made me feel really tiny
Found that site a few months ago, I think. Many minds were blown. Such an awesome site.

It's impossible to comprehend it, though. :(
Just found this in reddit.
looks more like a tumblr thing.
Ghostride Kickflip, or is that a regular kickflip? I can't see his footing.
You can see the back of his left foot hanging off the left side.
You can see the back of his left foot hanging off the left side.
Must be a regular kickflip then, the one in my avatar is a Shuvit into a Ghostride Kickflip.
I'm surprised they don't do that for the X Games. I'd watch it if it showed cool shit like that.

Very cool, but not good for competitions. Never skated a day in my life, though - could be completely wrong for all I know.

I tried to to a Shuvit as per normal, but the extra weight behind my back foot, sent the board flying down the block, instead of the extra 10 inches it's supposed to move. Literally, everything is wrong when you have a camera down there.
I've seen a few videos where the Go Pros are mounted underneath the skateboard. But the most of them are Go Pro athletes with 1000 go pros mounted everywhere so it wouldn't surprise me if it was dual taped under the board with no casing.

[editline]18th September 2012[/editline] Actually I take that back, GoPros have served me quite well. When mounted properly.
Attach a second camera on the opposite side; balanced.
thats even more weight though
at least the weight is balanced
at least the weight is balanced
the board just becomes insanely hard to flip.

woo! free ferris wheel rides whenever you want!
I wonder if you stop the ferris wheel if it will start up again.

If anything, that seems like it'd belong in the creepy stuff thread. The way it screeched at the end sounded like a little kid screaming. As unsettling as it it, it's still neat.
