I was thinking Killzone 2 on elite difficulty until you mentioned FTL. FTL can be extremely unforgiving at times, to the point where you might encounter one of those high level unmanned vessels at the very start of the game. Also, having to deal with mantis or rock men boarding your ship is rage inducing fun for the whole family! Especially when you're near a star that's giving out solar flares like Oprah.

I always had a hard time with Company of Heroes even though it's fun. I'm just not that good at strategy games. :v:
Also, Metro 2033 ranger mode. DAMN. Not to mention S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC on the hardest difficulty. That was a pain to beat. Once your weapons break down in Dead Island that game is also tough.
Hardest game though for me was probably beating Alien Syndrome on Wii. That was so fucking infuriating. It took me literally 30 times to beat the freaking final boss. Not to mention all of the other bosses.
