So I hear that in France the priests of the church don't have the authority to perform the legal marriage of two individuals. I am of the opinion that this is inherently stupid. Separation of church and state, sure, but goddamn if people want to get married by a priest let them

Priests can have whatever religious authority you're willing to give them but there's no reason they should have any legal authority.

Apparently you have to get your whole ceremony done if you want a ceremony but if you want to be [i]legally[/i] married you have to go to an office or something.
I fail to see the reason why a priest should be denied this small legal authority. What harm does it do, honestly?
This was odd to bring up, I know. It's just something that came to mind when I learned about this in French 1. We don't have to continue this. I was just stating what was on my mind, which happened to be this.

Needlessly injects religion into what should be a state affair, not to mention you have to make allowances for all religions or you're playing favorites. Should a minister of the Church of the SubGenius be able to marry people? Pastafarian priests?

If you plan a great big wedding ceremony and spend thousands upon thousands of dollars, why is going to an office and getting legally married such an inconvenience?
I think the best counterargument you had was about making allowances for all religions. "Injecting religion into state affairs" doesn't seem like such a horrible offense in this case, to be honest.
Again we don't have to continue this it's just something that was on my mind
