ah, I've been using [url=http://antiverse.isa-geek.net/VD/]virtual daivve[/url] (stupid name I know), it's a fork of gametable made specifically for 4e

it has quick little status effect icons you can put on pogs (combat challenge, divine challenge, prone, immobilized, stuff like that) and a better macro system which saved me a ton of work

the guy making it is currently working on actually integrating it with the official character and monster builders and having it automatically make macros for powers and skill checks
I've been looking for a decent free program for a while. All the good ones aren't free though and a ton of them are for fourth edition which I personally dislike and have no rulebooks for. Between my friends and I we have a reasonably large chunk of the 3.5 set.
basically the only decent looking thing I've seen that would work well with 3.5 is maptool, but it looks like a bitch to figure it out because it has horrible ui

I use the official builder actually, gonna guess onyx does it by hand with the rulebooks

Picking all the magics I'll have to use seems like a pain.

Most of the time I don't even need to use the rulebooks. But yeah, I do it by hand because it's not really quicker for me to use a character generation program.
